Two Night Poldark minibreak.

Come and see Poldark’s Cornwall for yourself and be back home in time for the next episode on our Poldark minibreak.

Arrival day:

Check in at The Residence at Bolenna from 2.00pm: Free evening, with dinner included on arrival night. Time to perhaps enjoy Winston Graham’s “Hendrawna Beach” and walk to his memorial bench to enjoy one of our sublime north coast sunsets.

Day one: The Residence breakfast is served from 8.15-10.00am

10.00: Departing from the hotel.

We begin the first day of the Poldark minibreak with a drive westwards through the heart of Cornwall’s mining country taking in views of Illogan and Sir Francis Bassett’s huge mining empire. At St Michael’s Mount we will stop for photos and coffee at the beautiful Godolphin Arms before driving via Penzance towards our first visit Poldark film location of the day; the pretty fishing inlet of Penberth Cove. This has featured in many scenes, with Sam and Drake’s cottage, some famous stepping stones and a stream that is so much shallower than it looks when Drake takes his bath there! We will then visit Porthcurno and look down on the stunning beaches featured as parts of Hendrawna Beach and where Ross had his vision of Demelza and himself whilst awaiting trial.

Whilst we are here we may if possible visit the magical Minack Theatre (nominal entrance fee applies) and its story of a remarkable woman who made its creation, her life’s work. A short drive takes us to:

Porthgwarra (the NAMPARA Cove of the series) we will see the tunnel where Ross kept his boat, the crystal clear waters where Demelza watched Ross swim and where the pilchard harvest was taken in. A shortish walk to the rocky outcrop of Gwennap Head showcases where countless scenes have been shot and from here you can see Land’s End and take in some breathtaking views. Then we cross from the south coast, across a few miles of rough moorland to the historic:

Tin Coast and a lunch stop for a traditional Cornish pasty in St Just

Driving past Botallack Manor which featured in the original Poldark TV adaptation as Ross Poldark’s home Nampara, we arrive at the amazing heritage site of Botallack. The mines here feature as Grambler, the perilously sited and ill-fated mine belonging to Francis Poldark and Wheal Leisure and Wheal Grace. This place is hallowed ground to Poldark fans and the newly opened Count House coffee shop has a short film about the area and its use in the series. Having walked right down to the twin engine and winding houses of Crowns mines we will stop in here for a well earned cuppa. Before returning to the hotel.

Day two: Breakfast is served from 8.15-10.00 am.

10.00: Check out and depart from the hotel

We begin the second day of our Poldark minibreak where Winston Graham began his epic saga of the Poldark family, looking out from Droskyn Point at the view of Perranporth that inspired his Hendrawna Sands. A brief exclusion round the village shows you the site of the real Wheal Leisure mine and the location of Graham’s writing chalet before heading north east to:

Holywell Beach where so much of the current production of Poldark has been filmed. With the iconic Gull Rock to its western tip, Holywell has had its fair share of star studded filming! Season 4’s opening sequence with Ross emerging from his swim in the sea was shot here, Drake and Morwenna, Dwight and Caroline and our favourite heroes have all had emotionally charged romantic scenes here. This is even where Demelza and Hugh had their secret “assignation”. The Holy Well of St Cuthbert that gives the beach its name is nestled in a cliff here and has an important role to play in the later books. This is also the site of the cave where Ross and his daring comrades effected their rescue of those trapped in the Wheal Plenty accident.

Following this emotive beach location we drive east to Bodmin Moor to enjoy our exclusive visits to Ross and Demelza’s home: NAMPARA. Stand where Ross and Dwight shared a glass of canary to toast Julia’s christening. Look out from the doorway of Nampara over Ross and Demelza’s garden and walk the farmyard where Demelza was washed under the pump to rid her of “crawlers” and where Ross admired her whilst eating an apple. See some of the actual livestock that starred alongside Aidan and Eleanor. Nearby you can see the original cottage that Dr Enys resided in and was frequently visited by the ill-fated Keren Daniels. All set with the imposing granite backdrop of Bodmin Moor’s Roughtor and its highest peak curiously named: Brown Willy.

We finish your whistlestop tour of our Poldark minibreak locations with a trip to the historic port of Charlestown Harbour where most of the maritime scenes of Poldark have been filmed and enjoy a farewell drink or perhaps Cornish Cream Tea.

Here we are close at hand for onward travel via road (being close to the A30), by train from St Austell station (for trains scheduled for after 15.00 hours) and being just half an hour from Cornwall airport for later afternoon and evening flights.
