Falmouth

“I really love Falmouth because as a university town it has a really exciting vibe and loads of great cafes and pubs. Falmouth is a real town, inhabited by students and locals and as such really has a lot to offer. It isn’t just there for the tourists and as such I think it’s a gem”

Perranporth

“OK, so Im a bit biased as I’ve lived in this large coastal village for nearly twenty years and three generations of my family have lived in my house, so we call it home. The beach at Perranporth is the actual beach where Poldark is set and the whole place is filled with references to the story. Even the real Wheal Leisure mine was here! I can show you around some very interesting back lanes where you will be able to understand the history behind the saga."

St Michael’s Mount

"This tidal island has a history of human habitation dating back to the Iron Age and its magnificent castle and abbey have crowned the island for hundreds of years. It is a half day to visit and tour the whole place and there is no easy walk up it! But the view is a wonderful pay-off for the intrepid. A half day visit here can be combined with a half day to St Ives for some shopping and art appreciation if you fancy it.”

Port Isaac and Padstow

“Although pretty over-exposed because of its status as tv and film set, Port Isaac is pretty village deserving of patronage and set on a particularly pretty part of the coast. You can even see Tintagel from here and there’s some other hidden gems around too, such as Port Quin and Doyden Castle.”

Holywell Beach

“Again, you could be forgiven for thinking that Hoywell is the ONLY beach in Cornwall for the amount of times film crews turf-up and shoot on it! However it is pretty unique with the iconic Gull Rocks and the Holy well of St Cuthbert to be found at low tide and its timelessness stems from not having any buildings to detract from its raw rugged beauty”

Padstow

“Just a personal opinion but I prefer Padstow to St Ives any day! And definitely in high season!! St Ives can be overrun and somewhat oppressive with its tiny streets but Padstow seems to always have room for visitors to enjoy the atmosphere. Maybe avoid May1st as the Obby Oss celebrations mean that it’s not possible to get anywhere near the town centre at all!"

Examples of our tours

There are basically three geographic areas that cover most of the Poldark’s locations so three days of touring will cover not only these but all the other must-see highlights of Cornwall along the way in that locality. What is not practical is to try and cherry pick from these to make a one day tour because of the topography of the countryside. A quick WhatsApp or Facetime conversation with Karen will help you to zone in on those places most important to see.

Poldark Tour

West of Cornwall

Taking in famous Poldark locations a such as Penberth Cove, Porthgwarra and Gwennap Head and the famous mine engine houses at Botallack. Along the way we take in sights such as the magnificent St Michael’s Mount, Penzance, The ancient fishing village of Mousehole and the majestic splendour of the West Penwith Peninsula . We drive back via St Ives on the “most romantic road” in the UK and along the way we will stop for a pub lumch or perhaps grab & go a traditional Cornish pasty for a clifftop picnic.

Poldark Tour

Nampara North Coast & Port Isaac

Exclusive Tour of Nampara north coast with visits to other Poldark locations such as Charlestown Harbour and Bodmin Moor as well as the village of Port Isaac where “Doc Martin “and “Fishermen’s Friends” were filmed. This is a very special day which starts at Charlestown Harbour where all the maritime scenes of Poldark were shot, along with many other productions. Followed by an exclusive visit to the farm used as Ross and Demelza’s home. A short drive up to Port Isaac to see the fictional “Port Wenn” and ending the day with a drive westward and a walk on Holywell Beach where all the Poldark beach scenes were filmed.

Poldark Tour

The Lizard Peninsula locations of Kynance Cove, Gunwalloe and Falmouth

Travelling to the southernmost tip of the UK we first call in at The Lizard and the spectacular Kynance Cove. Its unusual rock formations and azure sea is a favourite with all visitors to Cornwall. Then we will visit The Church of the Stroms where Dwight and Caroline marry and Dollar Cove where Ross and Demelza share their final goodbye kiss. Following this we drive to the port town of Falmouth for some shopping and lunch and weather permitting an optional boat trip across the bay and up the Fal River to King Harry Ferry or Truro before driving to the north coast village of St Agnes for Wheal Coates engine house and St Agnes Head.

Tintagel Castle, Port Isaac and Padstow

Tintagel Castle, birthplace of the Arthurian legend, Port Isaac and Padstow: Foodie capital of Cornwall. This tour can take in a leisurely drive along the most dramatic parts of the Atlantic Coast stopping for photo opportunities along the way including the Huer’s Hut in Newquay and the dramatic beaches of Watergate Bay and Mawgan Porth which is fast becoming the village of choice for the rich and famous.

The Great Gardens of Cornwall

Due to its unique climate and the warmth of the Gulf Stream the gardens of Cornwall bloom earlier and longer that most others in the UK. Any keen horticulturist would want to see The Lost Gardens of Heligan, The ingenuity of The Eden Project and the gardens of the great houses such as Lanhydrock near Bodmin. A tour taking in all three of these is a long but rewarding day which combines with the inner treasures of arguably the best of the National Trust owned houses in Cornwall.

The diverse cornish festival scene

Festivals in Cornwall

Cornwall has fully embraced festival culture, from Boardmasters to The Great Estate, Tunes In the Dunes to the Porthleven Food Festival, Cornwall is very fond of a festival get-together.

The Sea Shanty Festivals of Port Isaac and Falmouth are particular favourites of mine for atmosphere and rowdy get-togethers. Truro and Falmouth both have arguably the best of the Pride Festivals and for literary fans there is the North Cornwall Book Festival in Bude which is co-organised by our celebrated Cornish author Patrick Gale.
